A walkathon led by HH Sheikh Nahyan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Sports Council (ADSC), and a wide range of sporting activities highlighted the National Sports Day in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi on Wednesday, March 7.
The day-long event held in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and Al Dhafra regions saw schools, the government sectors and the public participate in a wide range of sporting activities to mark the occasion.
The Sports Day activities under the aegis of ADSC was held in cooperation with the ADSC, Ministry of Interior, Department of Education and Knowledge and Special Olympics Regional Games.
“The National Sports Day, now on its third year, is a reminder on the benefits of sports and physical activities to the community,” said HH Sheikh Nahyan bin Zayed.
“We are very glad this awareness campaign has reached all our citizens from little children to men and women of all ages and abilities. Today we witnessed thousands of them engaged in active sports at all levels and this is a sign of progress.”
HH Sheikh Nahyan praised the unstinted support and care provided by the UAE President HH Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, and HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces.
Joining HH Sheikh Nahyan bin Zayed at the walkathon at the Zayed Sports City were HE Major General Mohammed Khalfan Al Rumaithi, Chairman of the General Authority for Sport and Vice President of the Abu Dhabi Sports Council, HE Dr Mugheer Al Khaili, Head of Community Development Department, HE Dr Fahd Matar Al Neadi, Director General of the Executive Council of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council, HE Maj. Gen. Abdul Aziz Al Maktoum Al Sharifi of the Ministry of Interior and Chairman of the National Olympic Committee, HE Aref Hamad Al Awani, General Secretary of ADSC, and HE Abdullah Abdul Ali Al Humaidan, General Secretary of Zayed Higher Institute for Humanitarian Care and People with Special Needs.
The day was marked by a wide range of sporting activities conducted in both public and private sector schools alongside competitions organised by ADSC.
Aside from the sporting activities, workshops and seminars were organised for students, teachers and parents, as well as the general public to create awareness on the benefits of sports.
In all, 255 public schools, 196 private schools and 15 community schools participated in the Sports Day activities.
The Department of Education and Knowledge encouraged all students, teachers and parents to participate in sports activities organized in public schools in coordination with the Ministry of Education and private schools, in addition to sporting events and activities organized in cooperation with the Abu Dhabi Sports Council in community schools.
The goal has been to emphasise the concepts of community sport by broadening the base of popular participation in various sports activities, thus enhancing an active and healthy society.
School children, teachers and parents expressed their happiness in participating in the activities of the Sports Day, pointing out that such events brought together all segments of the society to love their homeland, reinforcing the concept of national identity and highlighting the values of love and affection amongst all.
The activities also contributed to the dissemination of sports culture to raise awareness of the importance of exercise and physical activity in the health of the individual.
