The UAE national Muay Thai team made an immediate impact on the global audience when they won a gold, silver and bronze in their first appearance at the World Championship in Cancun, Mexico.
Elias Habib Ali was the winner of the gold medal in the five-member team that included Mohammed Al Kathiri, Zakaria Al Jumairi, Noureddine Samir and Ameen Mutassem.
The team and the officials were given a hero’s welcome on their arrival at the Abu Dhabi International Airport on Sunday.
They were received by HE Abdullah Saeed Al Neyadi, chairman of the Muay Thai Federation, HE Aref Hamad Al Awani, general secretary of the Abu Dhabi Sports Council (ADSC).
HE Al Awani praised the work of the Muay Thai Federation for the success achieved at the global stage.
“Success wouldn’t have come without the work and strategic plans of the federation, particularly HE Abdullah Saeed,” he said.
“It’s a massive achievement in a competition that drew 70 countries and being our first appearance.
“We at the Abu Dhabi Sports Council are proud of their achievements and very keen to support and harness all the potential of the federation and Emirati athletes to raise the country’s flag in such global events.”
HE Al Neyadi thanked the leadership of the country and sponsors for the success they had on the world stage.
“We are really proud of our athletes and those behind them in both technical and administration for their efforts to bring glory to the nation. It’s a magnificent achievement.”
