The boat ‘Al Wasf’ owned by Dubai’s Crown Prince Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum and skippered by Mohammed Hamad Al Ghashaish won the second Dalma 60-foot dhow race on Thursday.
Two of Sheikh Hamdan’s boats – Zilzal and Al Shaqi - also finished in the top four in the traditional sail boat race that had a prize fund of Dh25million, the highlight of the five-day Dalma Festival at Al Dhafra.
Zilzal skippered by Marwan Abdulla Al Marzouqi and Al Shaqi with Khalaf Butti Al Ghashaish crossed the finishing line in second and fourth respectively.
Toofan owned by Hamdan Saeed Jaber and skippered by Ahmed Ismail Al Marzuoqi finished third and Brigadier Musabeh Rashid Al Fattan owned-Barraq was fifth in the 80 nautical-mile race that drew 116 boats and more than 3,000 sailors.
The winning boat received Dh1.5million The first five boats to cross the finishing line were also presented motor vehicles and the top 100 boats to finish received a share of the prize fund.
The festival under the patronage of HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Abu Dhabi Government’s Representative, was organised by Abu Dhabi Sailing & Yacht Club (ADSYC) in cooperation with the Abu Dhabi Sports Council (ADSC) and the Heritage Management Committee.
“It’s important to preserve the traditions and culture of the country, and the Dalma Festival provides that,” said Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed.
“We thank our rulers for making this happen, and both encourage and provide awareness to our youth in traditional sports. We are overwhelmed of the response in this second staging of the festival.”
In attendance were Sheikh Rashid bin Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Sultan bin Khalfan Al Rumaithi, Undersecretary of the Governor's Court in Al Dhafra, Ahmed Matar Al Dhaheri, Director of the Ruler's Representative Office in Dhafra, HE Aref Hamad Al Awani, General Secretary of ADSC and HE Ahmed Thani Al Rumaithi, Chairman of the Supreme Organizing Committee, Issa Saif Al Mazrouei, Vice Chairman of the Festival and Cultural and Heritage Programs Committee in Abu Dhabi, and Obaid Khalfan Al Mazrouei, Director of the Festival, Director of Planning and Projects at the Committee, Majed Ateeq Al Muhairi, Executive Director of ADSYC.
