The UAE’s organisation of the 17th Asian Cup and the Club World Cup received high praise from the world and the continental football governing bodies FIFA and AFC.
For the first time in its history, the continental championship hosted 24 teams and 51 matches played across four cities – Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, Dubai and Sharjah – from January 5 to February 1.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino and AFC President Sheikh Salman bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa led the tributes for the UAE’s organisational acumen and excellent hosting.
HE Mohammed Khalfan Al Romaithi, Chairman of the UAE General Authority for Sports and Deputy Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, expressed his happiness at the success of the tournament.
“On behalf of the host nation, I thank all those who contributed to the success of the Asian Cup, including officials, committee members, working groups in the four cities, volunteers, security personnel and the media,” he said.
“We are hosting the Asian Cup for the second time after 1996, and the success we had we felt in the happiness we saw on the faces of all our guests and participating teams, tournament officials and the public.”
“I can’t express my gratitude in words to those who worked hard to achieve this success.
“The Asian Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup both have received the seal of confidence from the world’s governing body for the sport and I can assure you the UAE will be home to many bigger sporting spectacles in the future.”
