Abu Dhabi Sports Festival heralds 44-day community fitness and games

Those spending their summer in Abu Dhabi can now take part in various sporting and fitness activities in the comfort of air-conditioned facilities at the Zayed Sports City.

The third staging of the popular Abu Dhabi Sports Festival this year under the theme of “Keep Your Business, Keep Your Health” runs for 44 days from Sunday until August 20.

HE Aref Hamad Al Awani, general secretary of Abu Dhabi Sports Council (ADSC), said they are delighted to organise the festival under the guidance of their Chairman His Highness Sheikh Nahyan bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

“His Highness has always supported and encouraged us to take the lead and the initiative with the aim of making sports a daily routine in the lifestyle of our people,” he said.

“The festival this year is in cooperation with our partners Zayed Sports City and the Health Department, and will be held in three domes especially erected for the events.

“The festival is also part of a series of community sports events which the sports council is keen to support in the process of sports interaction in the community, which includes various sports activities and available to all members of the family.

“Some of the competitions will be held in covered areas and playgrounds, and the air-conditioned domes. They are for everyone to enjoy, from the kids to adults as well as the entire family.”

Mohammed Hamad Al Hameli, undersecretary of the Department of Health in Abu Dhabi praised the role of ADSC and its Chairman His Highness Sheikh Nahyan bin Zayed in staging the popular festival for a third successive year.

“His Highness has always been very supportive and encouraged us to involve the whole community to join and make sports and fitness a daily lifestyle for the people,” he said.

“Our objective is to raise awareness and encourage the community to participate in summer activities and enjoy their fitness regimes without interruption.”

The activities are open to Emirati and expatriate men, women and children of all ages and levels, and includes a children’s camp for ages six to 12.

The festival is sponsored by the Department of Health in Abu Dhabi, Etihad Airways, Emirates Automotive and Food Company, Agthia, Al Ain Water and Dar Al Shifa Hospital.

The sporting activities include football, basketball, volleyball, tennis, ice skating, bowling and fitness classes.
